The Gold Rush

A fleet of fusion-powered spacecraft needs a fuel supply on the scale of the civilization it serves. The Gold Rush imagines the industry behind that demand: deuterium refineries in the atmosphere of Venus, helium-3 extraction around Jupiter, and the materials and vessels needed to work in worlds hostile to human life.

On Venus, tall separation towers link the dense lower atmosphere with the cloud deck. Pressure differences drive gas through their pipes, while centrifugal separation collects deuterium-rich water vapor. The film treats this machinery as a planetary instrument, with rushing air sounding through its towers. But deuterium supplies only one part of the fuel mixture; the route continues outward in search of helium-3.

Around Jupiter, the challenge becomes surviving gravity, radiation, and violent storms. The episode follows the creation of a speculative superconducting material, metallic hydrogen, and the assembly of enormous magnetic vessels in a dry dock on Callisto. Their superconducting structures provide both support and shielding as they enter the Jovian atmosphere, enclosing a quiet inhabited space within the surrounding turmoil. Out of the Cradle EP06 traces a fuel network from extraction and material science to the ships that make this new frontier accessible.
