The Gold Rush
In the interstellar age, how does humanity feed a starship’s engines?
In this science-fiction documentary, we descend into Venus’s supercritical inferno and dive the radiation abyss of Jupiter. There, humanity must master a new kind of mining — sieving deuterium from an atmosphere, filtering helium-3 from a storm, and forging the lightest atoms in the universe into metal.

Our fusion engines are ready. The fuel is not — rarer on Earth than gemstones. The helium-3 dusted onto the Moon and Mercury by the solar wind is forty years of rations. The real feast is locked in the gas giants, inherited from the primordial nebula.
Venus is a high-pressure inferno. The surface is hot enough to melt lead; the air presses down like an ocean nine hundred meters deep. And yet this inferno holds the richest deuterium in the solar system — one hundred and fifty times the concentration of Earth’s seas. A thousand hanging distillation towers breathe like planetary lungs. A fifty-kilometer drop and a ninety-fold pressure gradient drive the airflow to the edge of sound. Each tower yields ninety tons of deuterium a year, the energy of nine hundred million tons of coal. Supercharged updrafts sound chords across the clouds; that same thrust lifts a city in the sky, watered by twenty-five million tons of byproduct that feeds an entire industry above the deck.
To open the gates of Jupiter, humanity must first finish a great alchemy: at near absolute zero and five million atmospheres, hydrogen is locked into a metastable metal. A wire no thicker than a human hair can carry the entire output of a giant nuclear power plant. Eight million four hundred thousand of those superconducting keels are laid in the Valhalla basin on Callisto — 1.88 million kilometers from Jupiter, the only Galilean moon that lies entirely beyond the radiation belts — into a twelve-kilometer, ten-million-ton magnetic-flux ship. It cuts across Jupiter’s raging field lines and raises two hundred and fifty billion newtons of buoyancy. Not a drop of fuel. One charge, and it can hang in the atmosphere for decades. In the shallow skies sleep seventy-four trillion tons of high-purity helium-3. Filter fifteen swimming pools of Jovian air, and you have one kilogram — enough to burn until the Sun goes out. Outside the walls: lightning a thousand times Earth’s, and ion storms that tear through everything. Inside: a magnetic field of zero — a moving garden, purer than the surface of the Earth.
Civilization was born on the charity of a star. It was always going to become the light itself. Deuterium and helium-3 — the lightest fuels in the universe — carry the heaviest of missions. In the most hellish mines in the solar system, in the last place that looks like a treasury, we ride out another interstellar gold rush.
